About MELT App

The Monitor Enforcement Locate Threats (MELT) app is a community-driven platform designed to provide situational awareness regarding enforcement activities. Our goal is to empower communities with information through anonymous, user-submitted reports and publicly available data.

How MELT Works

MELT App provides a dynamic map interface where users can view and submit "sightings" of enforcement activities. These sightings are anonymous and contribute to a real-time overview of events in various locations. The platform also features a chat function for community members to communicate and share information.

  • Sighting Reports: Users can submit reports detailing enforcement activities, including location, type of activity, and other relevant observations. These reports are crucial for building a comprehensive picture of events.
  • "Cool Down" Period: To prevent spam and ensure the quality of reports, a "cool down" period is implemented between consecutive sighting submissions from the same user. This helps maintain the integrity of the data on the map.
  • Threat Analysis: Submitted sightings undergo an automated threat analysis process. This system evaluates various factors, such as the nature of the reported activity, its proximity to sensitive locations, and the frequency of reports in a given area, to assign a threat level. This helps users quickly identify areas of concern.
  • Community Chat: A real-time chat feature allows users to discuss sightings, share additional context, and coordinate efforts. This fosters a collaborative environment for information exchange.

Browser Alerts

MELT App offers optional browser alerts to notify you of new sightings and threat updates even when you're not actively on the site. These alerts are designed to keep you informed in real-time about critical developments in your area of interest.

How Browser Alerts Work:

  • Subscription: When you enable "Browser Alerts" in the header, your browser subscribes to our notification service. This allows us to send you push notifications directly to your device.
  • Real-time Updates: Alerts are triggered by new sightings or changes in threat levels, providing immediate notifications without needing to refresh the page.
  • Privacy: Your subscription is anonymous and not linked to any personal identifying information. We do not track your browsing activity or share your notification preferences with third parties.

Troubleshooting Browser Alerts:

  • Browser Permissions: Ensure that notifications are allowed for MELT App in your browser's site settings. Browsers often require explicit permission to send alerts.
  • System Notifications: Check your operating system's notification settings. Sometimes, notifications might be blocked at the system level (e.g., "Do Not Disturb" mode).
  • Re-subscribe: If you've cleared your browser's site data or cookies, you might need to toggle the "Browser Alerts" switch off and then on again to re-establish your subscription.
  • VAPID Key Configuration: (For developers/administrators) Ensure the VAPID public key is correctly configured in the deployment environment. If this key is missing or incorrect, browser alerts will not function.

If you continue to experience issues, please consult your browser's help documentation or contact support.

Abuse and False Report Management

To maintain a safe and reliable environment, MELT App employs a robust system for managing abuse and false reports. Our goal is to ensure the accuracy of information and prevent misuse of the platform. This system leverages AI-powered content moderation to identify and address infractions efficiently.

Basic Site Rules:

  • Do not submit false or misleading information.
  • Do not use abusive, hateful, or discriminatory language in chat or reports.
  • Do not attempt to disrupt the service or interfere with lawful activities.
  • Do not share personal identifying information of yourself or others.

Common Infractions and Penalties:

  • Minor Infractions (e.g., accidental false report, minor chat rule violation):
    • First Offense: Automated warning and a temporary restriction on posting/chatting (e.g., 1-hour cool down).
    • Subsequent Offenses: Increased cool-down periods or short temporary suspensions (e.g., 24 hours).
  • Moderate Infractions (e.g., repeated minor violations, intentional but non-malicious false reports, moderate abusive language):
    • First Offense: Temporary suspension from posting/chatting (e.g., 3-7 days).
    • Subsequent Offenses: Longer temporary suspensions (e.g., 30 days).
  • Severe Infractions (e.g., malicious false reports, hate speech, incitement to violence, attempts to disrupt service):
    • First Offense: Immediate and permanent ban from posting/chatting.
    • All associated IP addresses will be flagged and potentially blocked.

Our system uses a combination of AI-powered content moderation and human review to identify and address infractions. Flagged content is automatically reviewed, and repeated or severe violations lead to escalating penalties. Users who are blocked or suspended will receive a notification detailing their infraction and the duration of their block. For any questions regarding a block or to appeal a decision, please contact the site administration at admin@lumenhelix.com.
